Mac Studio Fix Fluid Foundation Review

09:10

Hello everyone!

Recently I posted a review of my favourite foundation to date, you can view by clicking here. So I thought I would do a review of my worst foundation I have come across yet which I'm sure you can guessed by the title. Yes, its the Mac Studio Fix Fluid, a foundation that everyone seems to love, I actually despise.

Why I Tried It Out?
I had wanted to try this foundation out for such a long time! It was raved about so much on youtube and I watched so many demos which showed it looking so flawless on the skin. So I went to a counter, got colour matched and got a sample. I didn't actually manage to use the sample because I accidentally left it in my pocket and in it went to the washing machine! However, with the price only being around £20 and after watching countless reviews and demos, I thought I would take the plunge and just purchase it. I only ever intended this to be a daytime foundation because I knew that my trusty Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation would be the best for evenings when I'm going out.

Pros
This is a medium coverage foundation and truly lives up to that, so those individuals who want that in-between foundation, this is a great one for you. This also lives up to the fact that is matte, for people with drier skin I would absolutely avoid this but if you struggle from oily skin, I would recommend testing this out as I'm sure it would help your face from looking matte. If you're also looking for a foundation that is long-wearing, again test this out. I wouldn't say that this is as long wearing as my Estee Lauder Double Wear but it does have a good wear-time, especially just for daytime wear.

Cons
The shades of the Mac foundations are something that I realised many people struggle with. You either fall into the NC category which is so yellow or the NW which is extremely pink. I didn't realise how yellow toned this was until I bought it and put it on but I did manage to rectify this with powder and bronzer so I didn't look like a Simpson. In my opinion, this isn't very buildable simply because it can start to look cakey. I don't struggle from dry skin at all, at the most I get drier around my forehead but whenever I put this foundation on it just sticks to dry patches I didn't even know existed!  This is then emphasised by putting a second layer on and because I like a FULL coverage, this is definitely a con for me. Another issue with foundations that I absolutely hate is when you can feel it sitting on your skin! This foundation does exactly that and I then end up taking it off and cleansing
my face.

How Have I Worked With It?
The best way I have found to work with this foundation is to wear an illuminating primer underneath it. I use the L'oreal Lumi Magique primer because it gives my skin such a lovely sheen to it, I then apply the foundation on top and this stops my foundation from sticking to my drier patches and looking cakey. For me, this primer doesn't prolong the wear of my foundation, so if that is something you acquire, a different primer would be needed.

Packaging and Price
Like the Estee Lauder Double Wear, this also comes in glass packaging, nothing too fancy, quite simplistic just like many of Mac's products packaging. This also does not come with a pump!!! You can purchase this separately from Mac or find cheaper alternatives on the likes of Ebay/Amazon but it really bothers me when a foundation does not come with a pump, it is so inconvenient.
The price of this foundation is £22 which at the time I thought it was reasonably priced, however, after trying and testing out this foundation, I don't believe the foundation is worth this.

Repurchasing?
At the moment, I am currently trying to finish the foundation and only wear it when I have a short day at university or when I am running errands. I wouldn't repurchase this product again.

Thank you for reading and I hope I have helped you to either purchase this foundation or stay away from it.

  1. Thanks for the review! I've always been hesitant about trying out mac products and don't use anything by them (mostly because I hear some pretty negative reviews about their customer service...yikes!).

  3. I really want to try this after reading lot's of great reviews but need to go to the MAC counter as I feel buying online the shades might be to dark for my pale skin so it will be good if they have lighter ones that will match for me x

  5. I've tried this foundation before and did find it too matte for me even though I have oily skin I prefer dewy foundations (I use Armani Luminious Silk now), the coverage on the Mac one is really good though!

  7. I haven't actually tried any mac products but I think there is such a hype around them people are often afraid to be honest in reviews when they haven't found the product to work as well as they thought it would, especially for such a high price :) I don't think i'll be trying mac foundation anytime soon because like you I hate being able to feel it on my skin :)

  8. A great thorough review! I haven't tried this product out yet because I'm always kind of hesitant to try out new foundations. I'm super picky with foundations and base products in general. I'm more experimental and adventurous when it comes to other stuff. Glad to hear that this isn't worth it to try. I'll follow your example and get a sample instead, but not forget that it's in my pocket ;)

    1. Im kind of an in-between, I do love trying out new bases but I also know that I'm a creature of habit so I just tend to wear the foundation I love instead. I would definitely recommend getting a sample and aha leaving it in my pocket was such a stupid mistake! Would have saved some money if I just checked and took it out before I loaded my washing aha xx

  9. I got a sample with this and definitely struggled with the color like you mentioned! It was way too orange on my face and it looked awful! I went and got rematched and the second one was better but I thought it was really drying and tough to wear! I love the powder but I did not like the foundation!

  10. this fluid foundation seems to have more cons than prons...nobody wants to look like a Simson. Maybe there are people for whose skin tone some of these fluid foundations would work, but shouldn't they have more options to start with, more tones and choices?..the price isn't affortable so they really should offer more shades. Great review!

    1. Ive heard similar reviews from other people that the foundations tend to be either yellow or pink, nothing in between. For concealers its actually a pro for me but with foundations, I'm sure most people want something thats more neutral, I could be wrong though! Thank you :) xx

  13. Aww, such a shame that it didn't work for you. I guess 20 pounds isn't a high price for you- but the pound is double the CAD dollar, so to me it's like you wasted $40 :(

  18. So sad to hear the MAC Foundation was disappointing. I was planning on getting it but if it's not worth it and you won't be repurchasing it, then I might have to give this a skip. Thanks so much for telling me <3

  19. Aw, I'm sorry to hear it was disappointing! MAC usually has a great return policy if it's under 30 days and you still have the receipt! If not, maybe try cutting it with moisturizer or primer for a smoother coverage?

  21. It was one of the first foundations I purchased from MAC, and after a few weeks, when winter came along, it started clinging to skin patches around my nose I didn't even notice beforehand. That was years ago and I stuck to using it, but it wasn't a product I´d happily repurchase.

  22. I used to use this religiously years ago and everyone can tell when you're wearing it, which I thought was a positive - now I don't struggle with teenage skin I use something far lighter and I think it was definitely in part to the cakeiness and yellowness! Thank you for the honest review :) x
